Wooden BallistaThis project was developed for a Latin Convention catapult competition. Originally, the Latin teacher at Leavitt Area High School approached myself, my brother Alec, and our good friend Drew about developing a system that would throw a softball for the competition. After some (but not a lot) of internet research, we came up with an idea for a Ballista - a large Roman cross bow, and got to work creating it from what we had. Using a mix of old and new materials and anything we could find, we finally began crafting. All of us had experience with construction and power tools and we got to work with the different wood, metal and PVC pieces. When it came time to compete at the convention however, we found that our design had warped and would not fire, earning us last place. This was defiantly a fun learning experience, and helped us realize better ways to approach projects in the future, as we did not really make a set plan on how we would attempt to build such a thing, and went with our guts and a few pictures.
